Look Up Before you Set Up! – 5 Safety Rules For Water Well Drillers
Safety is a concern for any water well drilling business, and at Granite Drilling, it’s a top priority for how we function on every job.  While our machinery is state of the art, it’s still machinery, and it has to be operated by experienced workers.  When you hire Granite Drilling, you can be certain that we adhere by my top 5 safety requirements –
- Look Up! – Look up before you set up!  Always ensure that when you raise the drill derrick or pump rig tower, you look up.  Seems obvious; however, many drillers have been killed by hitting power lines because they weren’t looking up to make sure they were clear to activate their machinery.
- Wear a hard hat – It happens all the time…a worker is bent over fixing something or connecting piping, and suddenly, he/she stands up and hits his/her head on a large, metal pipe.  Not good!  We always wear hard hats.  My crew is not allowed to work without them.
- Ear protection – The drill rig isn’t quiet.  It’s important to wear ear-plugs so that you can have a long career in being able to communicate with others on the job.
- Lift objects properly – I encourage my crew to lift objects with the machinery provided (cranes/forklift).  If they can’t use the machinery, then when we lift heavy objects from the ground, we bend our knees.
- Situational awareness – We are acutely aware of what is happening on any job, so as to ensure the team and equipment remain safe.
If you have a drilling operation, and you aren’t following these 5 rules, I recommend that you start.  Our employees are critical to our industry, and good ones are hard to find.  Let’s make sure we keep them safe.

I think it is wise to look for these signs in any well drilling company to make sure that everyone is safe during the process. Operating heavy machinery can present its own risks, some which are easily overlooked (like looking up!). I appreciate you defining some safety steps well drillers need to make, both for their sake and ours.
I think these safety tips are very important! A lot of people don’t think that ear protection is important but drilling a well can be loud. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.
I really liked the bits of advice you gave that were the most simple, like looking up before you raise the derrick or being sure that you wear ear protection and hard hats. I can see how these would be very important steps for any company that runs a regular drilling operation. I would also think that a customer looking to hire a drill contractor would do well to ask them about what safety regulations they follow to see how they conform to these.
I like that you mentioned being aware of what is going on around a job site. You want to be prepared for anything and be able to spot potential hazards in advance. It seems like quite a bit to remember, so an experienced contractor will probably be needed for my well.
That’s a good point that being close to loud machinery requires precautions. Ear safety is important, too. When you’re on an industrial project, I’m sure they are used to mechanical sounds, though.
Thanks for your comment about how you should always make sure that your driller uses a hard hat for safety around metal pipes. I like how you said that they should also lift anything with machines like a crane. If someone was looking into water well service, I would assume that they would remember these tips.
I never thought about pump rig towers doing damage to power lines. My parents were looking into deepening their well. They’ll have to be careful of the lines and equipment.
i have found this article helpful . i will come again for more info . Thank you
It’s interesting to learn that ear protection would be important when drilling for a well since it isn’t one of the most reserved machinery to operate as you’ve mentioned. That should be helpful to learn since I am having a water well drilled in our backyard for our plants and I had no idea it could be so loud. Now I should be prepared for when they operate at least. I’ll buy some earplugs for my fiance too later. Thanks!
While some of them may seem obvious these are some great tips for people working around well drills. I’m particularly glad that the article goes over how important it is for workers to have situational awareness. After all, you should always be aware of your surroundings when you’re working around a giant, metal drill that is piercing the Earth.
Hi,
Such a Great Post!
I like that you mentioned being aware of what is going on around a job site.
According to me, these safety tips are very important! A lot of people don’t think that ear protection is important but drilling a well can be loud.
I like how you said that they should also lift anything with machines like a crane. If someone was looking into water well service, I would assume that they would remember these tips.
Thanks for sharing this informative post with us.

Thanks for these safety tips for drilling a well. It’s good to know you should have ear protection of some kind, especially since the equipment isn’t quiet. Maybe it could be good to learn what protection would be ideal, especially if there are some products specifically made for drilling environments.
Thank you for letting me know five rules that should keep me safe while drilling. Until reading this, I would never had thought that “looking up” would be one of the steps. I had no idea that drillers could be harmed by hitting power lines because they hadn’t checked and known about them being in that area. Along with following this tip, I want to find a great place to go to and get training on how to drill.
I love what you said about wearing earplugs in order to maintain your hearing over time. Safety is super important, especially when it comes to drilling a water well. My neighbor is considering installing a well on his land, so I’ll make a concerted effort to contact a water drilling company in the area that is known for their safety procedures.
I like how you said that ear protection is important because the drill rig isn’t quiet. My husband and i are interested in having a water well drilled on our property so we can have a more sustainable lifestyle. I’m glad I read your article because I think asking potential drilling contractors about ear protection will help us find the most experienced company.
Thanks for helping me understand that the workers must look up since it will be dangerous for them to hit power lines if they forget to check. I guess I will relay this information to the people I will hire for the water well service we need from them. This will save me from being responsible when injuries arise especially that I am on a limited budget.
I thought you made a great point when you said that drilling experts should wear a hard hat on their jobs. My brother works for a company that remodels homes and businesses. It might be beneficial for them to hire a company that can help them with drilling and bored pier services in the future.
It’s interesting that a lot of drillers don’t look up to make sure they’re clear of powerlines before they start their work. Checking your surroundings should be one of the first things you do. I’ll definitely make sure I do when I start to drill my well.
My sister wants to have a water well in order to save up on utility bills and have an additional water source. It was explained here that she should look it up before setting up water well. Furthermore, it’s recommended to consult experts when in need of quality water well drilling services.
Wow, I had no idea that people could be seriously injured or even killed because they were too close to power lines before drilling well. My sister lives on a property that is outside of the city’s water system, and she is thinking about getting a well dug to avoid any hassle. I will be sure to send this to her so she can know a few things to keep in mind when she hires people to come to that for her.
Thank you for stating that it’s important to wear ear-plugs when drilling. My husband is thinking of starting a well drilling service and needs some tips. I will definitely pass along all of your great tips and information to my husband if he does end up starting a well drilling service.
I never knew that you should wear earplugs when working with a drill. My husband owns a drilling company and he is needing to find a new drill to help with making more water wells in the next couple of weeks. I’ll make sure to pass this information along to him when he does get a drill so he can know how to be safe.
I like what you said about wearing a hard hat so that you don’t hurt your head on a pipe. My brother wants to get a well put in his backyard in the coming weeks. I’ll share this information with him so that he can make sure that everyone working on this is safe.
I’ve been meaning to have a water well drilled in my backyard to conserve some energy. That’s why I’m currently looking for a water well drilling service around Missouri. I’ll make sure to encourage the crew to lift an object with cranes for forklifts.
You made a great point about looking up before you set it up to make sure that you know what to expect with safety. My husband and I are looking for a water well drilling service to help us with the installation of our well. We will keep these tips in mind as we search for a professional that can help us best.
You made a good point that drilling isn’t a quiet job. My husband and I are currently planning to get a well drilled in our property for irrigation purposes. I think we should get our farm animals away first before calling in well contractors.
It was nice f you recommending to have professionals drill the well because one can get in contact with powerlines or other things buried. My uncle bought a property outside the city, and he wants to install a water well. I will pass him the recommendation about hiring a water well contractor in the area and drill the hole to start his project.
My brother has been planning a lot of upgrades that involve water for his beach house. It really helped when you noted ear protection as an important part of the well drilling process because my brother and I want to be around when we get the upgrades are done so these safety procedures will definitely help us supervise the workers. We’ll be sure to have the workers, and ourselves, follow these protocols when we get an installation service done for the beach house. Thank you!
I appreciate that this post reminded us to wear ear protection when undergoing water well drilling. It makes sense to wear them as the drilling process can damage the ear due to the noise and vibration. I will remind my contractors to wear the ear protection when undergoing the work.
